Minyak Serai Wangi (Citronella)

It has been a while since my last posting. It was because I was busy with Serai Wangi Extraction Project back in Terengganu. I got excited when I was invited to evaluate the potential of the project by my client. I ve closed deals and to move to next level.

BUT talking about citronella oil is exciting. Cymbopogon nardus (ceylon) and C. winteratus (java) are the common species. The leaves contain citronella oil. How to push and collect this precious oil from the leaves?....It's all about engineering. Chemical eng that is.

Jeruk Buah Anggur-duit seringgit

In my family facebook"keluarga Pak Majid", I mentioned about jeruk buah anggur being brought by my grand to visit us especially when in sick bay. jeruk anggur ini ialah jeruk dalam tin macam jeruk nanas, longan etc yang ada dipasaran sekarang. I hardly see jeuk anggur dalam tin these days. Surely it was imported then (in the 70's). Yes, it really cure...sikologinya. But may some truth it the food. Anggur is known scientifically for high antioxidants capacity. yes this compound is good for health.

Tapi, with today's jeruk anggur, I don't recommend anyone to eat, especially if it from Siam. High artificial colour, saccharin. Totally no no as health food although can be appetizer sometimes. This jeruk can be found in jeruk stalls be it in shopping complexs or in small stalls in wet markets.

jeruk anggur dalam tin remind us adik-beradik to my grandmother "Chek". But above all it is the tradition that need to be continue, the tradisi dan adat melayu, membawa buah tangan bila berkunjung ke rumah orang dan menziarah orang sakit.

Our arwah grandfather, 'Ki" as how we called him, had another practice that he taught us to follow, giving money away or giving what you love most....It is the higher deed of a person. He will no matter who you are, give RM1.00 during on Hari Raya sebagai duit berkat. never fail to give us money (5-10 sen in the 70's) when we visited him or met him on the road and brought goodies to us all even just 1 piece of biscuit or candy. His name is Abdul Rahman (Aji Mang) and his actions live up to the name given....garang tetapi sangat penyayang.

Al-Fatihah to arwah Aki and Chek

Beauty from your kitchen

I was reading my brother's blog on Tahi Minyak (owngsaying.blogspot.com.) It reminded me of my childhood days of fun and run. I was closed to my grandmother "Che" as how we called her. I was the one chosen for asisting her in tapai making, akok making, baulu, kueh bakar, cari mengkuang and sometimes cari kayu api. Was I rajin or what? yes I like to talk and ask questions. Then people called me Mashitah as to mean keletah in a nicer way. But above all I was rajin too. Very ringan tulang and like to experience many new things. I learned alot from her. Oh arwah Che is my Tok Guru Mengaji. So I respected her not just as my granny but as my guru mengaji too. There are many memorable moments to be documented about mengaji but in later issue.

I want to talk about beauty from my granny's kitchen. perharp if one...day in ten to twenty years time , my blogs content publishable as reading materials, people could still extract valuable materials for scientific and medical purposes.
Talking about collecting kayu api, sometimes I noticed kayu api that bleed hot liquid. Not all kayu api that can have this effect. It is said that that liquid is good to reduced scars by rubbing it onto scars. What is exactly this liquid? Resin? Cellulosic materials? It could reduced dark spots too as they claims.

Arwah Che used minyak kepala for her hair. To the newly prepared coconut oil she soaked bunga tanjung or kenangga or melur for aromatic effect. Yes her hair was not that grey while she aging. Ohhh there was another one important item in hair care...sikat kapit. This kind of sikat is made of wood materials made in China. Good for expelling kutu from my hair too then. You need minyak kepala and rubbed thoroughly to your hair and it will ease the removal of head lice (kutu). Did like to be applied with minyak kepala on my hair? NO and always NO. I cannot stand the rancid smell of it. It is ok if it is still fresh. But most of the time if I slept over her house, her gentle and persuasion always worked on me though.

These days, all the rancid and sticky nature of coconut oil solved. Through cold press and fermentetion and separation techniques...all gone but the nutrients. We even can drink VCO now for health maintenance due to high short and medium chain fatty acids.

Beside berwuduk constantly, perah kelapa help to soften the palm. Drink air kelapa and eat the tumbun. All about coconut is good for health and beauty.

Please don't leave coconut behind.
